An interaction between artistic languages

A story that develops within the limits of speculative narrative. In a new world that is beginning to be defined, a man, an eventual hunter, and a beast, a product of this new reality, are at stake for dominance. It all depends on the tip of an arrow.

In this context, it develops The beast and the hunter (Cossetània Edicions, Col·lección Gent del Llamp), with texts by Lurdes Malgrat and illustrations by the Vallense artist Pere Español, which both define as “an interaction between artistic languages”.

«Pere and I coincided at a time when we were both working on very close themes, both what I wrote and what he painted. So, we started talking about our respective projects and sharing texts and paintings. In this way, an artistic confluence arose”, affirms Lurdes Malgrat, who adds that “the book is neither an illustrated album, nor a comic, nor a graphic novel. It is the work of two artists who complement each other and whose artistic language offers nuances around the same idea”.

Regarding the format of the publication, the author reports that «La Gent del Llamp has a long tradition of having worked with artists, writers, painters, photographers, etc. So, in this last stage, he wanted to recover this link and he has returned to work in this line ».

Specifically, specifically, «I was writing this story that is part of a series that takes place in the field of speculative narrative, that is to say, that is at the limits of reality and in which genres such as science fiction are framed. , supernatural presences, detectives, vampires, etc.”

For his part, the plastic and multidisciplinary artist adds that “the artistic work has not been difficult, because I was at a time when what I painted coincided with what Lurdes wrote, although for this publication I have done a specific job.” At this point, it should be noted that Pere Español is also the author of the covers Signals to the coast (Cossetania Editions) and The secret of the red lands (Onada Edicions), whose author is also Lurdes Malgrat.

the illustrations

Regarding the images, Pere Español says that «my work is ambiguous, since it is not clear if the face of the characters is human or of another being, since what I have tried is for the illustrations to capture the environment, also dark and ambiguous, of the tale».

Along the same lines, the multidisciplinary artist says that “the color range of the sixteen illustrations contained in the publication corresponds to colors with which I normally work.” «For long periods of time, I have painted with browns, ochres, yellows, garnets, etc. This is another confluence with the story of Lurdes, since she works in this color scale”, adds Pere Español.

In this regard, the writer affirms that «Pere’s paintings stimulated me to continue writing in the line that I was doing. Sharing our work as we went along gave us feedback, because the artistic atmosphere he created also communicated with my literary atmosphere. This is the beautiful part of the interaction between artistic languages.

introspective look

Now in The beast and the hunter both meet again to, in the author’s words, “weave a joint artistic discourse, the text broadens some nuances and the paintings others, and in which an introspective look at the essence of the human being concurs.”

From the story, Lurdes Malgrat assures that “he was looking for universes and contexts distanced from our day to day, in order to be able to place the characters in extreme situations, that is, to make very deep attitudes, thoughts, desires and feelings emanate from these same circumstances.” and vital.”

In this context, the author anticipates that “after a nuclear detonation a new world appears in which two groups coexist in tension, the surviving human beings and the new characters that are the result of this world” and adds that, for this reason, “the narrative is a reflection on different approaches to how we feel and live tomorrow in the face of death».

As for what reflection The beast and the hunter tries to evoke in the reader, Lurdes Malgrat believes that «literature should not provide answers, but communicate feelings and open questions in readers, and that each one will respond in their own way. I am interested in the reader asking many questions in a dichotomous and ambiguous situation. Then, each one must decide who he is or what he wants to be: the beast or the hunter ».
