The relationship of stephen dorff with the Marvel movies belonging to its growing cinematic universe it is somewhat complicated. The actor participated many years ago in Blade: Vampire Hunter (1998), one of the first films of the contemporary era of La Casa de las Ideas. However, said tape was not linked to what we now know as the MCU, and Dorff has been quite critical of the franchise led by Kevin Feige, the one that consists of putting together all the stories of the comic book characters in films that, in the long run, , connect with each other.
The interpreter, who played the villain Deacon Frost in the aforementioned vampire movie starring Wesley Snipes, does not hesitate to offer his strong –and negative– opinions regarding the franchise films. During a chat with The Daily Beast to promote his next film, Divinitywhich is now at Sundance, the actor launched himself against the new superhero films.
What’s more: his statement included a very direct mention of another production studio that also does comic book stories in live action. What Stephen Dorff thinks about Marvel movies also applies, according to him, to what is related to the DC label. These were his words:
“I think Divinity it should be bought by the big studios, and if the big studios were smart – if DC or any of these companies were doing cool stuff – they would be looking for the next Eddie Alcazar. [director de Divinity]Because that’s the future. Not to do Black Adam and useless garbage over and over again”.
Later, he argued that the entertainment business is no longer what it was when he began his career with character-based fantasy properties from the printed page:
“If comic book movies were more like when I started, when we did Bladeor the few that have been decent over the years, like when Nolan did the knight of the night and he reinvented Batman after Tim Burton, who is obviously a genius… when they were interesting, like when Norrington did Blade, and William [del Toro] I was there, dammit. But all this other crap is just embarrassing, you know what I mean? I say, God bless you, they make a lot of money but their movies suck [ríe]. And no one will remember them. no one will remember Black Adam at the end of the day. I didn’t even see that movie, it looked so bad.”
In the same way, he launched another criticism, this time directed towards the next reboot of Blade, which will be part of the MCU. The new adaptation, starring Mahershala Ali, has been known to go through a series of obstacles on its way to the big screen, and for Dorff this is not good. He said so:
“In Marvel they are used to being destroyed anyway. How are you doing with that PG Blade movie, which doesn’t get a director? [ríe]. Because everyone is going to laugh at whoever goes there, because we already did it and we did it better. There is no Steve Norrington [director de la primera adaptación] Over there”.
Although Dorff is wrong in assuring that the new tape of Blade He still hasn’t found a director – it was confirmed several months ago that Yann Demange (Lovecraft Country) will take the reins–, something he said is correct, and that is that Marvel has already received complaints from him, so this is not new. In 2021, the actor launched himself against Black Widow and in fact used a very similar choice of words. These were his comments at the time:
“I keep hunting for good things because I don’t want to be in Black Widow. It looks like rubbish to me. It looks like a very bad video game. I’m ashamed for all those people, I’m ashamed for Scarlett Johansson. I’m sure she’s made five or seven million dollars, but I feel ashamed for her. I don’t want to be in those movies, I really don’t. I will find a young director who is the next Stanley Kubrick and work with him instead.”
Although shortly after he regret:
“Oh, I love Scarlett. I think that [mi opinión inicial] It was taken a bit out of context. She is a great actress. I’m just not a fan [de la película]. I love Scarlett, still. I heard that she will be a mom [por segunda ocasión] so I wish you the best. She’s an old friend of mine, so I feel bad for that comment”.
What do you think of what Stephen Dorff said about Marvel and DC movies? He might apologize on this occasion as well.
Jose Roberto Landaverde Movie buff and music lover. I am fascinated by writing, listening, reading and commenting on everything related to the seventh art. I’m a fan of Rocky and Back to the Future and obviously one day I’ll climb the “Philly Steps” and drive a DeLorean. Faithful believer that cinema is the best teleportation machine, and also that on the big screen we can all see ourselves represented. I constantly, like Scott Pilgrim, ask myself: “Does bread make you fat?”
