Starts from Torti Theater in Bevagna, Saturday 19 November at 9 pmthe Umbrian tour de The mother of monstersshow with the unpublished dramaturgy, staging and direction by Lorenzo Collalti, inspired by the tales of Guy de Maupassant, French writer, playwright, travel reporter, essayist and poet, and one of the founders of modern fiction. Produced by the Teatro Stabile dell’Umbria, the staging investigates and constructs reality and daily life between madness and irony, just like the writer does.

After Bevagna, The mother of monsters will be staged in 9 other Umbrian cities: Narni, Tuoro sul Trasimeno, Mansion, Foligno, Marsciano, Panicale, Gualdo Tadino, Corciano and Terni.

“Observing and deconstructing reality, without limiting yourself to a first sterile perception generating horror, was not fashionable even in Maupassant’s time; for this reason an author like him seems so detached from his time, so ancient yet so current. – Explains the director Lorenzo Collalti – His almost methodical obsession with wanting to identify the most hidden aspects of human behavior is at the center of his work. Breaking the hypocrisy and the masks of reality, for Maupassant, means unleashing pain and irony together, confusing feelings without being able to grasp the crux of the matter. You don’t go in a single direction, there isn’t a single key to understanding the phenomena: this is certainly the most terrifying and at the same time hilarious aspect of his literature. The greatness of Maupassant lies in conveying this complex reflection through a disorienting immediacy. His stories are nothing more than very imaginative newspaper articles. In a few pages they describe a familiar fragment, a portrait of working interiors, a countryside scenario, without looking for anything epic. In fact, however, they remain journalistic pieces, devoid of an in-depth analysis of the context, the characters, the circumstances and therefore need dramatization. In the staging, this forces us to a contemporary rewriting of those same stories which, by becoming dramaturgy, carry Maupassant’s thorny questions with even greater clarity, beyond any context. The dramaturgical choice was to pivot on the story of Le Horla: a man confesses through a diary that he is possessed by a vampire and tries in every way to escape from his dominator; the more he tries to escape, the more he builds his self-destruction. In the protagonist’s crescendo of madness, a series of stories unfold, almost as if they were slips of the tongue, which come to life through thought associations. In the world of horror, time, as if it were a stream of consciousness and like any logical construct, loses its normative meaning of reality and allows a dialogue between the nineteenth century and the present day without judgment. Maupassant sees “invisible” monsters in his time and, through rewriting, “rediscovers” that monstrosity in ours.
