We tried Evil West, a game that is based on a simple idea, but a winning one for an action that promises to combine the western and horror genres.
What bomb is this Evil West? The idea is simple: to make cowboys, criminals and vampires fight each other, in an action game that is inspired by the greats of the genre and also puts a lot of its own into it. The result is a satisfying, compelling and technically respectable experience.
After tried Evil West for about forty minutes, we have no more doubts: this is a game to keep an eye on. There is not even a long way to go, expected on consoles and PCs in the fall, to be precise on November 22, 2022. The game started with the game already in full swing, however, it only took a few minutes to get the feeling of knowing by heart the its simple but irresistible mechanics. The protagonist is a cowboy with piercings and rings, a member of a secret society dedicated to hunting vampires, but here they will not be the only enemies who will oppose our victory.
We spend the first few minutes killing simple criminals, guarding a small border village that hides a dizzying crevasse between its streets that seems to reach the center of the earth. A few minutes are enough and more to realize the quality of the work done by Wild Flying HogPolish software house with over one hundred employees already responsible in the recent past of games such as Hard Reset, Shadow Warrior and Trek To Yomi.
Shoot to the enemies in these very first bars it is pure pleasure: the reactivity of the character is excellent, and so is the speed and accuracy of his aim. The shots arrive at their destination hard, they make every opponent who will oppose our investigation explode to mush. As they attack us, leaving their weak points uncovered, we will see red circles appear on their bodies that will indicate where to aim for maximum damage and satisfaction. There were some simply western games like this …
Things are bound to change abruptly once we descend into the eye-catching gash in the ground that the thugs seemed to want to protect at all costs. Below we will find a huge pyramid structure and many, many vampires ready to oppose our clerical enthusiasm. The enemies change, and the most effective strategies also change: against vampires the bullets are no longer so useful, their damage will be greatly reduced, fortunately the hero of the game is doing quite well even in close combat. Evil West’s close combat system is partly reminiscent of the last God of War: to hit you basically use a single button, but the moves will change depending on how many times and how long this is pressed. After several more or less powerful hits, combos usually end with a final grapple or punch that will send the enemy far away, or against obstacles that will damage him further.
Evil West’s vampires are big, nimble, often accompanied by hideous giant beetles, but nothing compared to the beast that will await us at the end of the portion of the game that we have been allowed to try. There boss battle, in this case, it will turn out to be quite simple, even if on the first attempt we had to prostrate ourselves at the foot of the enemy. But the second time there was no story: the wings of the tall vampire failed to protect him further and our slashes, combined with a good number of bullets, allowed us to bring home the result. Evil West also includes new skills to be unlocked through experience points, rather classic in what they offer, and four special skills that will be unlocked at predetermined moments in the plot.
And that’s all for the moment from a gameplay point of view, but it’s also enough. Evil West doesn’t disappoint as far as either controls and graphics: the former are pleasantly reactive and precise, while the graphics, while not being able to compete with the sinewy Kratos from Sony, nevertheless do their part, offering the player an extremely clean image, an excellent use of colors and quite spectacular scenarios. The only thing that hasn’t really driven us crazy, but this is a matter of personal taste, is the pulp imprint in the character design, but you get used to it soon and it still stays in line with the kind of experience the developers have. wanted to realize. We would have gladly continued to play, if also in this case the time available and the demo had not ended so abruptly …
For some Evil West will be an unexpected surprise, for others an exciting confirmation. We like the direction chosen for the project, it works and exalts, but as always we will have to wait to discover the final and complete form. Like Gungrave GORE, this game also took us back to that past where video games were all fun, little chatter and no pressure in having to sensitize fans on important issues and topics. This is pure fun, and sometimes that’s just fine!
- Very funny
- Graphically very good
- Let’s hope it’s not set too underground!
- The skills to unlock don’t seem like a lot
