In short, Stefan (Paul Wesley) sacrifices himself so that Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) can continue their lives together…
This instead is the complete plot of the last episode.
While Bonnie manages to awaken from her ‘catatonic’ state, Katherine finally reveals herself to the Salvatore brothers. Despite Stefan hitting her with the dagger, she returns to Damon telling him that she can leave hell whenever she wants.
Bonnie leaves Mystic Falls with Alaric while Caroline stays with Stefan and Damon to search for Elena’s body, hidden by Katherine. Bonnie has a plan: to use her magic and hellfire to destroy hell itself and Katherine. Damon stays with Katherine in the galleries under the Armery to make sure she’s in hell when Bonnie uses fire. Stefan joins him to sacrifice himself in his place but Damon forces him to leave with compulsion.
Damon doesn’t know, though, that Stefan injected himself with a dose of vervain on a daily basis so he’s immune to the compulsion. He then returns to Damon and taking care of him from his body, injects her to his brother, making him human. Stefan then dies with Katherine: in a state between life and death he meets Elena, tells her what happened and then reunites with Lexi.
Not long after, Bonnie manages to break the spell that kept Elena asleep. She and Damon can finally reunite.
The Salvatore house, as Stefan’s last wish, turns into a school for children with supernatural powers. Caroline receives a donation for the school from Klaus, who writes her a letter in which he says he hopes to be able to thank her in person, sooner or later for her. Bonnie decides not to waste her life anymore and embrace everything the world has to offer her, until she can reunite with Enzo.
Elena, writing her diary at the cemetery as in the first episode, tells of the happy human life that she and Damon spent together.
Once they are dead, Elena will see her parents again. Damon, on the other hand, will knock on Salvatore’s house and hug his brother Stefan again.
