Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle R is a very long and disconcerting name for those who are not familiar with this universe. It’s actually a 2D fighting game that sees heroes, secondary characters and villains from the manga of the same name compete. Released in 2014 on Playstation 3, it is now remastered and available on all consoles and PCs.

A work apart
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has a special place in the manga universe for many reasons. First of all for its longevity: it has existed since 1987 and should still continue for a while. Then because it is divided into several parts, like the seasons of a TV series, each with its era, its characters and its atmosphere, even if many links connect them. But also by its very stylized drawings, its references to pop and rock, and above all its absurdity in a universe that nevertheless takes itself very seriously. In short, an extremely singular comic strip, about a line of heroes, the Joestar family, who from generation to generation find themselves confronted with the vampire Dio, his descendants or his servants, all of whom have strange powers.
Rather niche, the manga regained popularity a few years ago thanks to a new anime adaptation in 2013, offered by Netflix in many territories, giving this extraordinary work a very large audience. Which explains this video game adaptation.
And if it finds itself remastered for today’s consoles, it’s most likely because the cartoon, which is only part 6 out of 8, continues to stream successfully.
We therefore find 51 characters from different parts of the manga, some of which several times, wearing different looks depending on the era. The gameplay is very varied since the fighting styles are particularly diversified. Some use magic waves, others weapons, without forgetting the Stands, these famous spirits that accompany the heroes in their fights. You can even embody a dog, a falcon or even a rider on his horse…
The graphic style close to the anime that was chosen means that the game survives well the passage of time and the facelift it has undergone. There are different game modes to play solo, but we regret the absence of a Story mode that would allow you to discover the adventures of the manga through the game. On the other hand, the game is full of bonuses to unlock and discover: costumes, colors, music, artworks… Enough to delight fans.
But where the shoe pinches for this remake is the Online mode. Nowadays, to combat latency, lag, between two players, developers use one of two different methods: delay or rollback. Without going into technical details, the second is much more faithful and preferred by players and unfortunately, the CyberConnect2 studio chose the other. This means that online confrontations suffer from serious slowdowns.
All-Star Battle R is therefore reserved for fans of manga, anime or fans of fighting games who like to compete locally with their friends. If you were planning on becoming the best online, you might be frustrated.
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle R is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch and PC.
