Season 1 of merlin features several supernatural species at Nevermore Academy, but one of its student groups remains a mystery. It is about faceless young people who, although they appear little during these first chapters, have generated a lot of curiosity.

The faceless students of Nevermore Academy barely make an appearance during Season 1, though they are seen when Jena Ortega’s protagonist first arrives at the school. Given that the faceless students seem to have a larger presence than other outcast species at the school, it is curious that the series never introduced any of these teenagers with names or confirmed what their species is called, something that Enid, Merlina’s roommate , yes it does with the rest of the groups.

Who are the faceless students at Nevermore Academy?

All that is known about them in the series is that they are pale, with no eyes, nose, mouth, or discernible facial features, though, like many of their classmates, the faceless students appear to be based on mythological figures as well.

Most of the species present at Nevermore Academy are inspired by creatures from mythology and esoteric lore, such as mermaids, jellyfish, vampires, or werewolves. Similarly, the faceless species appears to be based on a supernatural creature from Japanese mythology called a noppera-bo, which translates to “faceless ghost.”

In Japanese mythology, the noppera-bo is part of a class of supernatural spirits that appear human, but are faceless. They are generally believed to be harmless creatures. It is also said of them that they can adopt the face of other people, which would connect them with one of the species already presented, the shapeshifters to which director Larissa Weems belongs, for example.

The already confirmed season 2 of Merlina will be a good opportunity to explore some of the forgotten aspects of Nevermore Academy, as is the case with this curious group. Since the school seeks to help students master their supernatural powers, the abilities of the faceless students should also be explained at some point.
