Below we will report everything we know so far about the new film taken from the literary work that has become part of thecollective imagination through the many short stories, films and plays.
What is the release date?
The expected release in cinemas of the new film entitled Renfield will be next April 14, 2023.
Renfield: the trailer
Although the expected release date is not that far off now, no trailer has been released yet for Renfield; surely, however, we will not have to wait much longer before being able to see some scenes of the new film in which Nicolas Cage will play the terrible Count Dracula.
What is the literary story behind the film?
In the genre novel gothic horror Draculawritten by the Irish author Bram Stocker (1847 – 1912) in 1897, the undisputed protagonist is Count Dracula, considered the archetype and at the same time the prototype of the modern vampire.
According to the majority of critics, the figure of the count draws inspiration from Wallachian prince of the 15th century Vlad the Impaler, known as Dracula, or even by an actor of which Stocker was for a time the personal assistant, Sir. Henry Irving.
From the literary work, the character of Dracula became part of the popular culture and the collective imagination and the story has been adapted into numerous films, short stories and plays.
Stoker’s novel takes the form of a epistolary story: Multiple voices of narrators intervene to talk about the characteristics, powers and weaknesses of Count Dracula, a secular and noble vampire from Transylvania.
After dying and being buried in the tomb of his castle in the Carpathians near the Borgo Pass, Dracula has come back to life, spending his days for several centuries as an immortal in his now ruined castle.
Among the characters he ranks R M Renfieldthe servant of Count Dracula with mental disorders, guest for the entire duration of the novel of a mental hospital where he is under the care of Dr. John Seward.
Renfield is totally devoted to the count, to whom he offers help to carry out his plans; he suffers from delusions that compel him to eat living creatures from which he is convinced he draws life force.
Defined as “crazy carnivore”, Renfield takes on the role of a patient and the reader that of a psychologist whose job it is to understand the behavior of the character from a medical point of view and to learn the nature of an illusory vampirism guided by the will of Count Dracula.
Although Renfield’s character originates in the novel and has already appeared in over twenty films, he is not a main character.
It remains in the background being overshadowed by the characters of Count Dracula himself, by Jonathan Harker (a man who visits Transylvania only to secure a real estate deal for the count), by the latter’s fiancée Mina (with whom Dracula himself falls in love), by vampire hunter Van Helsing.
What is the plot of the film and how closely will it follow the literary work of Bram Stoker?
The new movie coming out it will not be a faithful adaptation of Stoker’s novel. The film uses the narrative source only as a starting point to give back to the public a new interpretation of the original facts.
What is already known about the plot is that the character of Renfield, who in Stoker’s story is faithfully devoted to Count Dracula (he will have scruples of conscience only towards the end of the novel), assumes here a different psychological thickness.
By now tired of the relationship of mad subjection with Count Dracula, the new Renfield assumes the role of the main character.
Escaped from the castle and went to the modern New Orleansthe protagonist’s life becomes more complex when he ends up falling in love and coming into conflict with some criminals.
At the same time, however, this character never manages to free himself completely from the presence of Dracula, who is continually demanding and possessive, coming to embody the guise of a demonic boss.
The new upcoming movie is rated as a horror comedyor a literary, television and film genre that combines elements of comedy and horror fiction, parodying the clichés of true horror.
The film also drew inspiration from Taika Waititi’s vampire series in What We Do in the Shadows and from horror-comedy classics such as An American Werewolf in Londonlike Evil Dead II or how Shaun of the Dead.
