In recent months, the artist Rä di Martino has explored the Carmelo Bene Archive housed in the Palmieri boarding school in Leccewhere the documentary materials testifying to the Maestro’s intense intellectual work are kept, consisting of videos, audio tracks, photographs, manuscripts and about six thousand volumes from his personal library once housed in Bene’s Roman home.

The result of this journey – of knowledge, study and reworking that led to the genesis of a video installation – was on display until 20 October in the Torre Matta of the Adriatic city, chosen as a retreat by Carmelo Bene (1937-2002) for many years.

The production of Di Martino’s work – promoted by the Polo biblio-museale of Lecce, by the TPP – Teatro Pubblico Pugliese, in close dialogue with Salomè Bene and Raffaella Baracchi, and in collaboration with AMA – Mediterranean Academy of the actor in the context of Once upon a time there was a geniuswinning project of the Culture Fund 2021 public notice of the Mic Ministry of Culture -, is part of the path that the Polo is promoting with various partners in the context of the twentieth anniversary of Bene’s death (Twenty years without Bene).

While researching the archive, Di Martino selected two diaries of notes from the title The vampire, with notes for a play about Dracula. An image has been elaborated in order to reconstruct the semblance of Carmelo Bene and his voice, which inspired that of the actor Lino Musella, then reworked by Di Martino.

The image created took on the appearance of the great actor making sure that he reappeared from elsewhere to read some passages present in two of his diaries in which thoughts, suggestions and notes related to the character of the Vampire are traced, a work that has remained unfinished .

Nonconformists, rebels, irreverent, provocative, irreverent, cheeky.
They are the protagonists of “Heretics. Art and Life”: men and women of the 20th and 21st centuries who have pursued freedom of thought often in collision with common feeling.
Pier Paolo Pasolini, Alda Merini, Carmelo Bene, Giovanni Testori, Nan Goldin, Mattia Moreni, Orlan
they are just some and some of the artists, authors, intellectuals, writers, musicians who populate the Mart exhibition dedicated to contemporary heretics. Audaciously stubborn, intolerant of rules and dominant thought, they have often paid for their positions with criticism, exclusion, isolation or, in extreme cases, with life itself.
