Although today it visibly suffers some wear and tear, it is true that superhero movies continue to be one of the most successful on the current scene. One only has to look at the success of Spider-Man: No Way Homewhich after its release became the sixth highest-grossing film in history (although it has now been relegated to seventh place after the release ofAvatar: The Sense of Water). But, there are productions far removed from the characters inspired by Marvel and DC comics, which in many cases managed -after its premiere- to bring out the colors of those responsible and were massacred by critics. Some of these films are those that arrive at CutreCon, the Madrid Cutre International Film Festival, whose twelfth edition is held from January 25 to 29 in Madrid.

A contest that is made up of 22 films, in both free and paid sessions spread over three venues: the Faculty of Information Sciences of the Complutense University of Madrid, the Cine Paz and the mk2 Palacio de Hielo. The opening session will be Supersonic Man -the Spanish version of Superman directed by Juan Piquer Simon in 1979- is the film chosen for the inaugural session of the festival, today Wednesday, January 25 at 9:30 p.m.

But before the inaugural session, CutreCon 12 starts at 5:00 p.m. at the Faculty of Information Sciences of the Complutense University with Captain Thunder and the Holy Grail(2011), adaptation of the popular comic created by Víctor Mora and Miguel Ambrosio (Ambrós) in the 50s. A chaotic production that led to a hellish shoot in which its director, Antonio Hernandez he had to deal with innumerable problems to bring the film to fruition; among others, the change of technicians and director of photography almost daily. For all this, the director will receive an award in recognition of all the vicissitudes he had to face in order to carry out his work.

Buena Vista International

On Thursday, January 26, the Faculty of Information Sciences of the UCM hosts the bulk of the day with up to three sessions, all of them with free entrance until full capacity. That day the contest starts with Superman IV: In Search of Peace(1987), starting at 12:00. The fourth installment of the adventures of the man of steel starring Christopher Reeve Y Gene Hackmann, which was actually a B-series byproduct that degraded the franchise in such a way that the character didn’t return to the screens until almost 20 years later. That day will also screen the tremendous Chinese production Iron Man against vampires (2022), the Spanish ‘slasher’ black prickly pear(2001) and the day will close with the screening of two Troma classics: The Toxic Avenger (1984) and Tromeo and Juliet (1996).

The CutreCon Official Film Section kicks off on Friday, January 27, with a screening at 12 noon at the mk2 Cine Paz of Delirio profundo: the first feature film by director Marta Montes, a story in which a ring with one eye that moves at will and endowed with supernatural powers irremediably marks all its bearers. Next, viewers will be able to watch Alien Housewife vs. Gay Zombie (directed by Andreas Samuelson): in which a woman resurrected by an alien will face off without quarter against an unhappily married gay man who is possessed by a demon who transforms him into zombie, while a couple of police officers will try to stop them. At 9:30 p.m. one of the star sessions of this edition arrives: Batman: The Moviethe first feature film of the batman released in 1966. It is the big screen version of the series of the same year starring Adam West Y Burt Ward like Batman and Robin respectively, which marked several generations with its colorful aesthetics and its delirious action scenes.

Warner Bros.

On Saturday 28 from 11:00 a.m., viewers who come to the mk2 Ice Palace will be able to see The Legend of Hercules (1997), a German film about the Greek myth that is already on Olympus among the worst animated films of all the times. Immediately after, a Mexican superhero arrives that will leave no one indifferent known as Mágico, the envoy of the gods (1990). Starting at 1:30 p.m., the screening of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles vs. Transformers (1989) will take place, an oriental film shot without any type of licenses that mixes the characters from two of the most beloved series by children of the 80s. At 4:30 p.m. comes the feline session, a double bill that begins with the cougar man (1980) and will continue with The Lion Man (1975), a Turkish production starring the legendary Ottoman actor Cuneyt Arkin. At 8:00 p.m. it will be the turn of a film whose resounding failure left George Lucas himself trembling: Howard, a new hero (1986), one of the first films to bring a Marvel character to the big screen. The day will close with The Amazing Bulk(2012), which is considered by many to be The Room (2003) of superhero movies.

The Worst Marvel and DC Superhero Movies

The end of the party will take place on Sunday 28 at the mk2 Palacio de Hielo cinemas with two marathons: Kaijutón and Superwomatón, in which titles such as Lady Street Fighter (1980) or They call me Macho Woman (1989) can be seen.
