Vampire Survivors creator has ‘no idea’ of roguelike success

Vampire Survivors roguelike creator Luca Galante says he has ‘no idea’ why the Steam indie survival game has proven so popular, saying it was ‘amazing’ to be nominated for The Game Awards, following the launch of the first Vampire Survivors DLC Legacy of the Moonspell.

Beginning development in 2020, Galante launched the full version of Vampire Survivors in October 2022. Since then, it has received over 165,000 reviews on Steam, earning the coveted “Overwhelmingly Positive” status and a Best First Game nomination. independent at The Game. Awards. Asked why Vampire Survivors has proven so popular, Galante says he has “no idea”, which makes the game’s success “really scary”.

“Since launch, I’ve tried not to look at the numbers or what’s happening online specifically so I don’t get too carried away,” Galante told IGN. ” [I] I kept my head down and continued to work on the game and the business, focusing almost entirely on player feedback on Discord and the Steam forums. The one thing that I’m sure has made the difference is our community managers who have done and are doing an amazing job of keeping communication open with players.”

Galante also says it was “simply amazing” to be nominated for The Game Awards, and discusses the philosophy around the Vampire Survivors DLC. “As a gamer, I’m absolutely into the idea of being able to continue to get content for the games I love, but very often these days I feel like DLC is designed around monetization. rather than good player service.

“Having a negative preconception of DLCs, I was very hesitant to try to create one, but I also couldn’t keep adding things to [Vampire Survivors] to have fun while there is a business to think about. My biggest hope is that we managed to make this a fair deal for the players and that they will appreciate it”.

Despite its title, its full launch and now its first DLC pack, Vampire Survivors still doesn’t feature any actual vampires – of all the enemies and monsters you fight in its roguelike levels, none of them are verifiable bloodsuckers. . Galante still can’t confirm if Vampire Survivors will ever feature vampires.

“Our marketing team said we couldn’t answer that question,” he explains. “The problem is that our legal team said the same thing. And then, what is a vampire?
