A major turnaround. TV fans were in for a treat in 2022 with shows such as The White Lotus and yellow jackets — who didn’t hold back when it came to their storytelling.
The HBO series, which returned to an anthology in season 2, quickly won over viewers with a new group of guests eager to enjoy their time in Sicily. Fan favorite character Tanya (Jennifer Coolidge) the time at the station however, was full of disappointment after her husband, Greg (Jon Gries), chose to return to the United States to work.
During season 2, Tanya took care of a group of homosexuals whom she met through Quentin (Tom Hollander). His assistant Portia (Haley Lu Richardson), meanwhile, was quickly seduced by Quentin’s nephew, Jack (Leo Woodall), which showed him all that Italy had to offer.
Things quickly took a turn when Tanya found out Jack and Quentin were having sex. At the time, Woodall spoke about his own reaction to the shocking moment.
“When I got the part, I didn’t know what would happen to Jack’s story. At that time, I just knew he was on the show. So when I got the first five scripts, I read them all right away. By the time I got to this point in the script, I could tell something was afoot,” said the vampire academy star said men’s health in November 2022. “And I remember reading it and immediately thinking about the scene in season one with Murray [Bartlett] and Lucas [Gage]. I’m actually very proud that I got to be part of volume two of this scene.
For Woodall, it was helpful to have an intimacy coordinator on set to oversee the filming process.
“It helps a lot. It makes us feel much more comfortable. We had great intimacy coordinators who really locked it down. It’s a closed set, and only the very, very, very necessary people who need to be there will be there,” he continued. “And especially in the scene with me and Tom, everything was choreographed to get the right feel, the right look for the scene, while protecting our angles and our lower regions.”
yellow jackets was also a show that had no shortage of surprising twists. From cannibalism to murder, the Showtime series has raised the bar with each new episode of its first season.
Jackie’s (Ella Purnell) Death from frostbite was a moment fans were still discussing even after the show was paused. Shortly after the finale aired, Purnell discussed his character’s inevitable end.
“I knew since I signed up for the pilot that I would die in the final. It was just very sad to read the finale and read the death scene and then have to come to terms with the fact that that’s it,” the actress explained to tv guide in January 2022.
Purnell noted that she didn’t have all the answers to Jackie’s story after filming yellow jackets.
“That dream sequence was another one of the things that when I read it I was a little dubious. And I doubted my ability to pull off in as impactful a way as I knew it should have been. So I was a little nervous when we filmed it, but actually when we did it made perfect sense,” she added. “Because Jackie’s whole trajectory is what she’s always wanted – for people to like her. All she ever wanted was to be accepted, valued, and appreciated, but she doesn’t know how to express those needs and wants.
Purnell concluded:[The scene] is that immediate feeling of relaxing in the warmth of her friends by the fire, and she is physically relieved from the cold, but she is also emotionally relieved. It’s so satisfying for her that eventually people apologize to her. And it’s interesting to play with different levels of Jackie realizing at some point, wait, something’s wrong, this can’t be real life.
