The plot of A Friend of the Family
Created by the creator of the acclaimed The Act Nick Antosca, A Friend of the Family is based on the harrowing true story of the Broberg family, whose daughter Jan was kidnapped multiple times – while she was between the ages of 12 and 14 – in the 1970s by a charismatic and obsessed “friend” of the family who convinced her she was a victim of an alien abduction. The Brobergs, very religious and faithful to all house and church, were utterly unprepared for the sophisticated tactics their neighbors used to exploit their vulnerabilities, keep them away, and turn their daughter against them. This series tells how their lives were changed forever and how they survived. The disturbing story of the Brobergs has already been told in the documentary Kidnapped in the sunlight (Abducted in plain sight) available at Netflixitself also based on the memoir Stolen Innocence: The Jan Broberg Story written by Broberg herself.
An absurd yet true story
The 9-episode miniseries wants to answer the question everyone asks themselves when they find out what happened to Jan: how could her parents let something like this happen? How did Robert manage to kidnap the little girl twice? “It’s easy to judge the Broberg family story from the outside,” creator Nick Antosca said in a statement. “Sometimes when people first hear this story, they get defensive: ‘How could those parents have let this happen? I’m not like them,’ they think.” The real Jan stated that the show’s creative team “captured the essence by explaining how good people can be manipulated and their children victimized.”

Playing the creepy kidnapper Robert Berchtold is Jake Lacy (The White Lotus).
