Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Amber Benson (Tara) confides in the tensions of filming and her refusal to return

The revelations are numerous from the cast of buffy the vampire slayerwith the release of the book Into Every Generation a Slayer Is Born: How Buffy Staked Our Hearts. Amber Benson, who plays Tara, explains in particular her decision not to return in the last season and resume her role.

Tara’s death in season 6 of buffy the vampire slayer had two huge impacts: it brought Willow into darkness – luckily Xander was there to save the world — and she broke the hearts of fans of the show. For Amber Benson, this departure was difficult, but it may have come at the right time.

The actress confided in the book Into Every Generation a Slayer Is Born: How Buffy Staked Our Hearts, written by Evan Ross Katz, and evokes tensions with a member of the team : “ this is the first time I’m talking about this. I had a few issues with someone on the show, and it came to a head as I was getting ready to leave. Leaving the show was sad because there are crew members, writers and actors that I adore, but I had made peace with that person and the show and it was over. »

She adds : ” I didn’t need to come back. And then everything changed and Joss realized he had made a mistake. Back then, people were faxing the production office like it was a huge, horrible thing, and it was devastating to a lot of people. I think Joss understood that he had made a mistake, that he had lacked insight. I sincerely believe that for all his flaws and all the frustrating things about him, he never meant to hurt the LGBTQ+ community. He just didn’t think. I can truly, from the bottom of my heart, say it was unintentional. It was a reckless mistake. »

Despite everything, Amber Benson decided not to reprise her role in the last season of buffy the vampire slayer : “ I didn’t want to come back. He really wanted me back and we just couldn’t agree. And largely because of my schedule. I couldn’t have gone to England and made The Ghosts of Albion if I had said yes. But more than that, I didn’t really have faith in what was going to happen to the character. I think if you’ve talked to other actors, they’ll be like, ‘Yeah, I came back…and he did what he wanted. »

I can’t decide what will happen to this character. »

This lack of confidence was already there when she learned that Tara was going to die: “ even though he told me he wasn’t going to kill me that way, he killed me that way. I did not feel very confident in this situation. And I felt like people had already been really hurt by that. And I’m not a screenwriter. I can’t decide what will happen to this character. I don’t own the reins of the series. And so between the timing, not having full confidence in what was going to happen and other things, it just didn’t work out.. »

Originally, Tara was to appear in the Connivences episode of season 7 of buffy the vampire slayer. His absence resulted in Nicholas Brendon (Xander) not having a presence there at all, leaving Sarah Michelle Gellar and Alyson Hannigan only stars to appear in all episodes of the series.
