Sarah Michelle Gellar recently spoke about the toxicity on the set of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the male chauvinism present in the production.
Although Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a cult TV series, the production of the show was rather controversial, and recently the protagonist Sarah Michelle Gellar parried of the toxicity that reigned on the Joss Whedon set during that time.
In the words of the actress:
That was a toxic and chauvinist set, in which women were brought into conflict with each other, and this was to avoid creating too much female unity. That experience led me to think that all sets were like this, and instead over time I had the opportunity to work with many women and men who support women, something that made me realize how different this experience can be , it’s easier. Despite this we still need to remember that we live in an age where women still have to fight to be heard.
Gellar’s words only confirm what was stated by other interpreters who worked on Buffy, and join the experiences of the cast members of Justice League, who have raised questions regarding the behavior of Joss Whedon.
The director has been accused of abuse of power, misconduct and threats made to actors on set. Although Buffy is remembered as a TV series that highlighted a female figure such as that of the protagonist played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, the female performers were the most opposed in the production.
Among the heaviest accusations we remember those of Charisma Carpenter, Cordelia of Buffy and in the spin-off Angel. She, the actress said she was fired by Joss Whedon after a pregnancy, and that the director would have called her “fat”, behaving cruelly towards her. In a Twitter post, Carpenter stated earlier that “all the joy of pregnancy had been sucked away, and Joss was the vampire.”
A reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was put into development years later and has now been put on hold. Here are the words of Sarah Michelle Gellar on the future Buffy, reported in an interview on the occasion of the release of the book Into Every Generation a Slayer Is Born: How Buffy Staked Our Hearts:
I vote for Zendaya, I think she would be great for this part.
At this point one wonders if we will see a new Buffy sooner or later.
