First Kill: the series canceled by Netflix after one season

Netflix canceled the vampire drama First Kill after just one season. The streaming platform pulled the plug after the series underperformed on two key renewal metrics, viewership and episode completion, it reports. Deadlines. This will likely come as a surprise to fans, since First Kill ranked in the top 10 English-language shows on Netflix three days after its June 10 premiere. It also reached the top three by the end of its first full week on the platform, amassing 48.8 million viewed hours. Only Stranger Things 4 and Peaky Blinders season 6 performed better in the seven days following their respective premiere dates.

First Kill is based on the short story of the same name by VE Schwab, who also oversaw the live-action adaptation. It stars Sarah Catherine Hook as Juliette Fairmont, a teenage vampire who falls in love with Imani Lewis’ Calliope “Cal” Burns, a monster hunter in training. First Kill received a lukewarm critical response, with many reviewers criticizing it for its lack of originality and uneven tone. It received positive mentions for adding a queer dimension to the vampire mythology, although some critics felt this aspect of the series was too limited.

Decline in subscribers for Netflix

The cancellation of First Kill from Netflix comes at a turbulent time for the streamer, who lost just under a million subscribers in the second quarter of 2022. Other negative press surrounding the company includes its recent lawsuit against Grammy Award-winning creators of an unauthorized Bridgerton musical, Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear.

Meanwhile, the streamer has just announced that he will be moving forward with a sequel and a spin-off of The Gray Man, the action thriller film by the Russo brothers with Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans. Netflix reportedly intends the two projects to serve as a stepping stone to a larger, expanded universe of Gray Man films.
