Netflix canceled the vampire drama First Kill after only one season. The streaming platform pulled the plug after the series underperformed two key renewal metrics, episode viewing and completion, reports Deadline. This is likely to come as a surprise to fans, as First Kill ranked in the top 10 English-language shows on Netflix three days after its June 10 premiere. It also hit the top three by the end of its first full week on the platform, amassing 48.8 million viewed hours. Only Stranger Things 4 and Peaky Blinders season 6 performed better in the seven days following their respective preview dates.

First Kill is based on the short story of the same name by VE Schwab, who also oversaw the live-action adaptation. The protagonist Sarah Catherine Hook as Juliette Fairmont, a vampire teenager who falls in love with Calliope “Cal” Burns of Imani Lewis, a monster hunter in training. First Kill received a lukewarm critical response, with many reviewers criticizing it for its lack of originality and patchy tone. It received positive mentions for adding a queer dimension to vampire mythology, although some critics felt this aspect of the series was too limited.

The cancellation of First Kill from Netflix comes at a turbulent time for the streamer, who lost just under a million subscribers in the second quarter of 2022. Another negative press surrounding the company includes its recent lawsuit against Grammy Award-winning creators. of an unauthorized Bridgerton musical, Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear.

Meanwhile, the streamer has just announced that it will go ahead with a sequel and a spin-off of The Gray Man, the action thriller by the Russo brothers starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans. Netflix reportedly intends the two projects to serve as a stepping stone to a larger, expanded universe than Gray Man movies.
