HollyBlood: When vampires are a metaphor for adolescence

H.ollyBlood is the Netflix film that offers a funny but reasoned parallelism between vampires and teenagers, linked by the desire for eternal youth. The director Jesus Font explains them to us.

HollyBlood is another one of those movies Netflix made available by the platform without notice. It is a Spanish-made comedy and features young vampires. Bizarre, absurd and nonconformist, it is directed by Jesus Font and is played by Oscar Casas and Isa Montalban.

Don’t expect anything though à la Twilight. HollyBlood enters the field of horror in an ironic and humorous way. The narrative combines the horror comedy with unexpected situations and dialogues that well restore the genuineness of the characters. After all, the aim of the film is to entertain and make fun of vampire stories.

The plot of the film HollyBlood

Hollyblood, the movie on Netflix, tells the story of Javi, a teenager like many others with a normal life. His existence of him has nothing special in the eyes of Sara, the classmate he likes. Sara only has eyes for HollyBlooda literary saga with vampires at the center of which a film will soon be released in the cinema.

Javi is determined to tell Sara how he feels about her but a series of unexpected events and misunderstandings make the girl believe that Javi himself is a vampire. So poor Javi, posing as a vampire, finds himself having to deal with the high school bully, Sara’s best friend and a Van Helsing fanatic obsessed with vampire hunting.

What no one knows, however, is that an ancient and evil threat lives hidden in their school, ready to attack again. So it will be that Javi and Sara will have to find a common point to fight together what turns out to be the most powerful vampire of all time.

To direct HollyBlood, the Netflix film, is Jesus Font, a Spanish director, producer and screenwriter with various experiences in the world of seriality. At his first film, Font describes Hollyblood like a romantic vampire comedy, as funny as it is disturbing. “And from this premise I tried to make a film that seemed classic on the one hand, recalling various masters such as Alex de la Iglesia, Joe Dante, Robert Zemeckis or John Landis, and on the one hand modern, close to the spirit of our times for staging, story and rhythm ”, explained Font.

Vampires, in the Netflix movie HollyBlood, are presented as an allegory for the anxieties of the adolescent protagonists. “Adolescence causes great emotional turbulence. It’s that rite of passage that involves a mix of rebellion and despair, as well as an obsession with being cool and panic about the onset of adulthood. Ironically, the film becomes a metaphor for adolescent alienation, loneliness, romantic betrayals and the pressure of social or peer group acceptance. In fact, it presents well-defined conflicts: school, loss of virginity, sexual desire, confrontation with classmates and with teachers, tutors, fathers and mothers ”.

“Vampires are nothing more than a vehicle to reclaim youth, firsts and the desire to bite the whole world,” said Font.

The two protagonists

At the heart of the Netflix movie HollyBlood there are the two protagonists, Javi and Sara, played by Oscar Casas And Isa Montalban.

Javi is a nerd who doesn’t believe in vampires but who, in order to win over his lover, is able to pretend to be one of them. “Javi moves between the confidence he has in himself and the insecurities typical of adolescence,” explained Jesus Font. “But, when he’s rewarded for playing a vampire, he feels comfortable in the role of seducer.”

Unlike Javi, Sara believes in vampires. In them, she sees represented the confrontation between good and evil, the erotic drive, rebellion and innocence in danger. “Sara seems to be virginal and naive but she is also intrepid and strangely perfect connoisseur of the world,” continued the director.

“I wanted to highlight the different, the losers who turn into teenage heroes. We all know that the fear of growing up prevents you from maturing but at the end of the film HollyBloodavailable on Netflix, all the characters, not just Javi and Sara, overcome their fears ”.
