hard to forget buffy the vampire slayer for all those who grew up in the 1990s. The adventures of Buffy Summers, this young high school student from Sunnydale responsible for slaying the demons that inhabit her city, have fascinated millions of fans around the world. But behind the success hides a much less rosy reality.
As some actors revealed a few years ago, and including Charisma Carpenter, Joss Whedon, the creator of the series, put some of them through real hell on the set. “Joss Whedon has abused his power many times. (…) These disturbing incidents triggered a chronic physical condition from which I still suffer. It is with a heavy and beating heart that I say that I faced the situation in isolation and, at times, in a destructive way.”she wrote in 2021 on social networks.
Heroine of this series, Sarah Michelle Gellar rarely mentions the slippages that occurred during the filming of the series which made her a star. Asked a few days ago by The Hollywood Reporter, she came out of her reserve explaining that she had to deal with “extremely toxic men”. “I’ve come to a point where it’s easier to talk about it. But I will never tell my whole story because it brings me nothing. I said everything I had to say because no one wins. Everyone loses”she let go.
“She’s had to deal with a lot of bullshit on this show for the seven years it’s been on the air. The things they put on her, without any real credit or pay, when she was often the only one working 15 hour days…yet she was still able to get that character to play every week and to do so proudly and professionally”added Freddie Prinze JR, her husband.
Going back to the rumors that qualified her as an actress at the time “difficult”, the actress revealed the bottom of her thought. “There was a time when I had the reputation of being… difficult (by miming quotation marks editor’s note). Anyone who knows me knows that it came from the fact that I always gave myself 100%. I didn’t never understood people who don’t. I’ve mellowed a bit in [mes attentes envers les autres] – I think it’s because I got exhausted”.
“It was obvious that Sarah didn’t have the support to be the leader she needed and wanted to be. There was tremendous resentment and animosity [à son égard] from a certain person – and I guess now we can all guess who”confirmed Emma Caulfield, aka Anya Emerson in the series.
“I’ll always be proud of Buffy. I’ll always be proud of what my teammates did, what I did. Was that an ideal work situation? Absolutely not. But it’s okay to like Buffy for what we’ve created, because I think it’s quite spectacular”concluded Sarah Michelle Gellar.
