James Gunn wants to fix the “fucked up” DC Universe: The director’s plans are the exact opposite of what Marvel does

The new leader of the study -together with Peter Safran- has announced some of the projects that they want to carry out in this new stage of the franchise.

Erase and new account. That is, more or less, what James Gunn and Peter Safran, the heads of DC Studiosfor the superhero franchise of Warner Bros. After a decade, his goal is fix the “fucked up” DC Universe doing the opposite of Marvel Studios: prioritizing the script and not announcing title release dates before the script is finalized.

“People have committed to dates [de estreno]with making movies no matter what,” Gunn has recounted of the modern studio habit of announcing projects without their creative teams having even been created. “In my heart, I am a writer and we are not going to do anything before the script is finished”.

In addition, Gunn has made it clear that the release dates will be delayed until the script is finished. “It’s the main reason for the deterioration in the quality of movies today compared to 20 or 30 years ago,” he says.

As he adds:

Screenwriters have been completely left out of the loop in favor of actors and directors and making the writer more prominent and important in this process is very important to us.

These have not been the only statements to highlight from Gunn. The director, who premieres the May 5th Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3He wants to avoid what, according to him, has been happening for years in the film industry: making films without a written ending. “They make movies without a written third act and they start writing it during production, you know, making it up as they go along. And then you’re watching a bunch of people stick it out and the action doesn’t even flow.”

Marvel and superhero fatigue: Kevin Feige explains how they can avoid one of the biggest criticisms their movies receive

Another problem Gunn has talked about is superhero genre fatigue. For Gunn, unlike comments made by the president of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige, it’s real. What they both agree on is telling stories with different genres. “You can’t be telling the same ‘good guy, bad guy, giant thing in the sky, good guys win’ story again,” Gunn says. “You need to tell stories that are more morally complex. You need to tell stories that don’t just pretend to be different genres, but actually are different genres”.

The first chapter of the DC Universe will be named Gods and Monsters (Gods and Monsters). Among the projects that will be part of this era are Superman: Legacythe Superman reboot written by gunn It is the only new title that has a release date: July 11, 2025.

will also take place The Brave and Boldwhich will follow Batman -other than the one played by Robert Pattinson- and Robinwhich in this project will be damian waynebiological son of the Dark Knight and Talia al Ghul. And… speaking of Gotham’s vigilante: The Batman II, the sequel to the film directed by Matt Reeves, will hit theaters on October 3, 2025.

Other announcements have been those of The Authorityfilm based on the comics of the same name by Warren Ellis Y Bryan Hitch. there is also Supergirl: Women of Tomorrowfilm based on the comic book series Tom King. It is not known if Sasha Calle, who gives life to the superheroine in Flash, will get into the skin of the protagonist in the film. Lastly, there will be an origin film for Swamp Thing.

Regarding series: Creature Commandosan animated fiction with vampires, werewolves and zombies, will once again feature the character of The Suicide Squad Weasel (Sean Gunn) and will introduce Rick Flag Sr. Gunn has written all seven episodes. On the other hand is Wallera live action series with Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) as the protagonist and with a story set between the first and second seasons of The peacemaker. Too Paradise Losta prequel set in Themyscira before the events that occurred in Wonder Woman and told in the style Game of Thrones.

What about the long-awaited and continually delayed series of Green Lantern? There is also news: lanterns will focus on the characters of John Stewart Y Hal Jordan and the project is compared with true detective. Finally, a television series of Booster Gold.

Now that Gunn and Safran have shown their cards, the question was forced: what happens to the actors in the SnyderVerse? Director of The Suicide Squad has spoken about the departure of Henry Cavill, who gave life to Clark Kent/Superman and returned in a cameo in a post-credits scene of Black Adam. The actor also announced his return as the Last Son of Krypton on his Instagram account to, days later, confirm that it was no longer going to happen.

“We Didn’t Fire Henry”Gunn says. “Henry never signed. He did a cameo and that’s the end of the story.” As he continued: “A lot of people made assumptions that weren’t real. For me, it’s about who I want to cast as Superman and who the director wants to cast. For me, for this story, it’s not Henry. I like Henry. He’s a guy cool. I think a lot of people have gambled, including previous regimes of this company. But this Superman is not Henry for several reasons.”

Henry Cavill will not return as Superman: James Gunn brings order to the DC Universe and moves on from the mess that Dwayne Johnson has caused

With that being said, what about Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Zachary Levi and whatnot. “There’s no reason why all the people you’ve mentioned couldn’t be part of the DC Universe.. We haven’t decided yet which story we want to tell that incorporates Shazam or Aquaman,” says Safran.

Finally, they have also talked about the controversies with Ezra Miller, which opens this year Flashand Levi -who recently made an anti-vaccine comment-, who will present soon Shazam! The fury of the gods.

“Ezra is fully committed to his recovery”Saffron says. “We support him on the journey he’s on now. When the time comes, when they decide they’re ready to talk, we’ll talk about how best to move forward. But for now, they’re completely focused on his recovery.”

Of Levi’s tweets, Gunn has said: “The actors and directors I work with are going to say things I agree with and disagree with.. And that is going to happen. I don’t have a list of things someone should say based on what I think. And you know, I can’t be changing my plans all the time because some actor said something I don’t agree with.”

As he concludes: “In the same way, whether someone does something morally reprehensible is another matter. We have to take all of that into account. It’s a balance. It’s a modern world and it’s a different place.”
