“Merlina” will have a second season

“Merlina”, a series that rescues the gloomy and comical universe of “Los locos Addams” to narrate the passage through high school of the macabre teenager of the title, now played by Jenna Ortega, was renewed for a second season after the enormous success it achieved on Netflix, where after its premiere last November it became one of the most watched strips on the platform.

“It has been incredible to create a series that was able to connect with people from all over the world. We’re so excited to continue Merlina’s winding journey into Season 2, we want to dive into another season to explore the weird and scary world of Nunca Más. We just have to make sure that Merlina hasn’t emptied the pool before,” said Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, both showrunners and executive producers of the series together with renowned filmmaker Tim Burton, in statements to the press.

It is that this version, adapted from the comics published by Charles Addams in The New Yorker magazine during the 30s, focused on the daughter of the couple made up of Homer (Luis Guzmán) and Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) with a proposal that questioned a whole generation of adolescents -and not so much- through a contemporary and centennial aesthetic that aroused fanaticism and even “challenges” on social networks to replicate everything from the clothing to the dance steps of the young protagonist.

Ortega, who came from working on strips such as “Jane the Virgin” and “You”, managed to differentiate her character from the one who for decades had been univocally immortalized in popular culture by Christina Ricci. (in the 1991 and 1993 films), giving her a style that preserves, in her own way, the cynicism and darkness of the original Merlina, but with a personality more in line with today’s youth culture, with her own codes and views on issues such as diversity or patriarchy.

In this story, Merlina is a girl who, like any adolescent, struggles to find her own place in the world, although her rebellion and particular sense of justice lead her to take revenge on her brother’s abusers, Pericles (Isaac Ordonez), throwing them piranhas in the swimming pool.

With this episode as a corollary to a series of “bad” behaviors, the Addams heiress is sent to Nunca Más Academy, which houses other students who are also rejected by the traditional academic system: mermaids, werewolves (and women) , vampires and all manner of fringe teens are welcomed at the school, headed by Principal Larissa Weems (Gwendoline Christie).

Soon, the academy becomes a scene as dangerous as discovery, when Merlina begins to develop a psychic gift that allows her to have visions of the future and the past at the same time that a wave of murders is unleashed that terrorizes the neighboring town, which he seems to have dark and supernatural ties to his own parents, also former students of the college more than two decades ago.

Since its premiere on November 23, “Merlina” managed to position itself within the Netflix catalog as one of the most successful series in its history, with more than 1 million hours of playback in its first 28 days available on offer.

In addition, the series broke the record for one billion hours watched in the three weeks following its release, joining the fourth season of “Stranger Things” and “The Squid Game” in reaching that figure, and thus far holds six consecutive weeks with more than 100 million hours of viewing on the service’s English series charts.
