The best vampire movies to devour without moderation

He lives at night and sleeps during the day, preferably in a coffin. It feeds on blood and can sometimes fly. He fears garlic, the sun, crosses, holy water and stakes in the heart. He is seductive, manipulative, violent, and egocentric. No, it’s not your tax auditor. It’s the Vampire.

The myth has always existed and was popularized in its current form by Dracula by Bram Stoker published in 1897. Since then, the vampire has been the subject of multiple books (the Twilight saga for example, or The Passage by Justin Cronin), series (True Blood, Vampire Diaries) and movies. Here is a non-exhaustive selection of the best vampire movies to see.

Cult vampire movies

Dracula (1993) . When we think of vampires, we think of Dracula, the terrifying count of literature. Francis Ford Coppola made this version of Dracula in 1993 and it is a monument of the genre. The cast includes Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves and Anthony Hopkins.

Vampires (1998). John Carpenter, director who excels in horror, has also rubbed shoulders with these biting monsters, in a style close to the boob. In Vampires, we follow the adventures of Jack Crow, a mercenary commissioned by the Vatican to exterminate vampire nests. One day he rubs shoulders with Valek, a powerful master.

Nosferatu (1922). The first film of its kind and a monument for lovers of black and white cinema, Nosferatu gave the vampire its letters of nobility. The basic recipe is given: an evil vampire and count, naive visitors, a young woman to seduce.

Horror comedies with vampires

The Vampire Ball (1967). If you could only see one, it would probably be this one. The film by and starring Roman Polanski follows the adventures of a zany professor and his assistant Alfred to Transylvania in the lair of a dynasty of vampires. In the casting we find in particular the sublime Sharon Tate.

Dark Shadows (2012). Tim Burton’s film is the adaptation of a cult series from the 60s. The vampire Barnabas Collins wakes up in the middle of the 70s and discovers that his family has changed a lot. The 5-star cast includes Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green and Chloë Grace Moretz.

One Night in Hell (1996). Take two clueless brothers in crime, lock them in a seedy bar filled with vampires all night. And you get a perfect cocktail. George Clooney, Quentin Tarantino, Juliette Lewis, Harvey Keitel and Salma Hayek give the reply.

Blade (1998). The movie of Stephen Norrington is an adaptation of the comics of the same name. Blade follows the fate of Eric Blade, a hybrid being who hunts evil vampires. Endowed with supernatural strength and bloodthirsty too, he must learn to manage these two facets of his personality. Wesley Snipes remains unforgettable as Blade.

30 Days of Night (2008). The small town of Barrow in Alaska will go like every year a month without seeing the light of the sun. When a vampire comes to town and sows terror, the sheriff must take matters into his own hands. Starring in David Slade’s film are Josh Hartnett and Ben Foster.

Interview with a Vampire (1994). The feature film of Neil Jordan, straddling romantic drama and horror, is an essential of its kind. In the 90s, Malloy, a seasoned journalist interviews Louis, a vampire. The latter tells him about his life alongside the terrifying Lestat and the young Claudia. Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Kirsten Dunst, Christian Slater and Antonio Banderas give the reply.

The dramatico-romantic vampire films

Thirst, This is My Blood (2009). This film by Park Chan-wook (Old Boy, Lady Vengeance) is one of the masterpieces of Korean cinema. Thirst also won the jury prize at Cannes in 2009. A young priest finds himself transformed into a vampire during a mission. But on his return to Korea, he will have to resist the charm of a troubling woman.

Only Lovers Left Alive (2013). The feature film of Jim Jarmusch is melancholic and almost philosophical. Adam and Eve, two vampires, cross paths over the centuries and their travels, and love each other deeply. But their eternity has become a burden. Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston play the protagonists.

Twilight (2008-2012). It’s hard not to mention the Twilight saga in the romance and vampire movie genre. The films adapted from Stephenie Meyer’s novels follow the tortured fates of Bella and Edward, plunged into a war of vampire clans. Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner star in all five films.
