Why don’t the orcs in the Rings of Power get the sun?

We all knew that sooner or later we were going to see a few orcs in The Rings of Power moving like they were a shapeless mass of beings looking for blood, but no one expected that by confirming it, they make us feel like vampires that sunlight can blind and burn. Now, do you know why this happens in the Prime Video series? Why do these orcs of previous ages flee the light of day?

The origin of the orcs

As with all of JRR Tolkien’s work there are many sources in the books and written appendices that can give interpretations, but it is true that in the case of the orcs there is a clear reference to how they were created according to the lord of evil they were lucky enough to have, and that ultimately it was he who made them. And there are two: Morgoth on one side and Sauron on the other. The former is the one we come closest to in the Rings of Power narrative and the latter is the one that Peter Jackson’s films have focused on.

So why can’t these orcs from the Prime Video series be exposed to the sun? Well, this dispatch of bloodthirsty diabolical soldiers was born when Morgoth needed to create his own army, which took place in a time of total darkness in which the two trees of Valinor were unable to fill with light all the ends of the earth. Earth. During this time, and according to interpretations of Tolkien’s work, the orcs have grown up and made their way through a world ravaged by darkness, so the passage of time has accustomed them to this lack of light.

This explanation could be understood in the same way as Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, in which he comes to say that environmental circumstances can mark key characteristics of each species, and just as giraffes saw their necks swell to reach food trees, orcs have adapted to darkness by creating a natural repulsion to light, which cannot touch their skin or eyes.

Are all orcs like this?

That’s the million dollar question because as we saw in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films, these orcs had no problem exposing themselves to daylight, so many fans have been clamoring for the criteria to be unified. Well, even here most connoisseurs of JRR Tolkien’s work disagree and it is not possible to say whether an orc feten should be like this or that.

And they don’t for a reason: the British writer, who gave his novels an incredibly vast historical background and lore that affected virtually every creature and people in Middle-earth, doesn’t didn’t elaborate on what the true origin of these orcs was or their characteristics and limitations, offering justified options for everyone to think of what they like best. Thus, while those of Peter Jackson are created during the reign of Sauron from rock and mud, all those of the Rings of Power are corrupt Elven servants of Morgoth who do not share this origin and who predate those of the Third. Age.

So that’s what we have: in the Prime Video series, orcs can’t be exposed to direct sunlight…do you like that?
