If Hamlet meditating on the skull will not be summoned, on the other hand the figure of the zombie will be explored from all angles: from the special effects of cinema to the Haitian origins of this incarnation of the living dead, and to its symbolic significance, to pose a question: but who devours whom?

Since I walked with a zombie by Jacques Tourneur in 1932 and Night of the Living Dead by George Romero in 1968, zombies have conquered the West and its cinemas, as Pascal Pinteau points out “Michael Jackson’s Thriller is the clip that has been seen by the greatest number of people and it is the introduction of the zombie to the very, very general public. It’s one of the landmarks in popular culture when it comes to the living dead.

The ten seasons of the series walking deadas well as the “zombie walks” organized in big cities like Berlin, Los Angeles or Paris, show the vigor of zombies to embody apocalyptic scenarios.

We must turn to Haiti to understand the origins of the zombie and the ghost of slavery that haunts the imagination of Haitian culture. From Haiti to Hollywood, how does the zombie metamorphose? Phillipe Charlier clearly distinguishes the two categories “The panic fear of a quick and contagious death, that’s the zombie of Hollywood. The real zombie of Haiti is an undead, a social death. They are individuals excluded from society.”

When the unconscious generates surviving images, it is a heritage that must be rethought. When going through the mirror can mean finally looking in the mirror.
