Irene Graziosi: “I wanted to investigate female identity”

It is one of the literary revelations of this year. «The profile of the other» (editions and/or) it has been carefully received, analysed, and sparked discussion. The novel tells the story of Maia, a 26-year-old in crisis, who becomes a consultant to Gloria, an 18-year-old successful influencer, weaving a complex relationship. You revealed an interesting narrator, Irene Graceful31, from Rome, who founded the project with Sofia Viscardi “Winds”. Today, Thursday 15 December, at 7 pm he will talk about his book to Out of place within the cycle “L’Ecole” elaborated by Inti Sartoretto. She will be interviewed by the «literary cultivator» Aurora Falettiwho takes care of the Instagram page _readings_. Free entry. Booking welcome: 340/516.89.97.

His novel is mostly read as an analysis of social media. The setting is that, but the fact that it is published by and/or suggests that in reality the focus is on something else. Like female identity. Is that it or is there something else?

“That’s right. Today many “internet novels” come out that investigate what happens on the net. But I was interested in talking about women. It is also true that women are more present on social networks, they are more active consumers. I see how women’s psychology is manipulated in this environment.”

The shattered mirror on the cover is very spot on. It introduces the theme of the alter ego, but also of projection. And also of the vampirism of Gloria, a more or less aware personality predator. Is the cell phone the new mirror or does it create vampires?

«I would say that it is a tool with which we have created an intimacy, as if it were the result of meeting another person, but it is not. It is all pervasive. It leads to self-manipulation of one’s image. I can’t tell if she is Gloria like this because she hasn’t been allowed to develop or because she is very young. However, among young people it can happen that there is a sort of exchange of personalities ».

When Gloria confesses that she has emptiness inside, she appears almost sympathetic. Did you want this or to underline a widespread phenomenon? And more precisely, the phenomenon of a generation or of those who live on social networks?

«I don’t know what my intention was, it seemed consistent with the character. I wouldn’t say that she is generational because Gloria is a person who takes everything from social media, ideas and money, while most people don’t. Gloria is in a phase where she’s starting to grow, she’s at a breaking point. Furthermore, you are at an age in which you still don’t have an idea of the world, you feel that there is something wrong, but you are just approaching the complexity of existence».

She works between social media and the web. How did you find yourself in the “rematerialization” of the novel? How does it feel to hold your book in your hand?

«It was actually a long process, the surprise dissipated a bit after three years of rewriting and editing, a long process. In the end, you are no longer the person you were when it all began.”

How did you deal with the difference in pace and breadth of the narrative?

«I started writing at university and also on the web I worked a lot on writing. I don’t think I’ve ever used a web language. All my work has gone through writing».

What method was used?

«It is a debut, there are naiveties. I’ve always been a reader, but recently I’ve begun to wonder what writers do to get ahead, what mechanisms they use. I wasn’t very disciplined, also because I had another job. I wrote a lot on weekends, on holidays. I wrote the paragraphs in my head and then physically put them down, I went ahead by blocks that I imagined before».

Do Maia and Eva embody two archetypes or is the choice of names random?

“It’s actually random. Maia is the name of a friend of my mother’s that I liked very much. Gloria, on the other hand, I thought so».

With the story of Lavinia he introduces the question of OnlyFans. But he doesn’t dwell much. How come?

“I’m interested, but not very much. Furthermore, it is a phenomenon that exploded when I had already started the novel. Lavinia is an ambiguous character who thus finds spiritual redemption, but she has been devoured by a certain world since she was a child ».

The ending seems to establish a strong distrust of the social system. Gloria feels freed from it. How do you see the future of social media?

“I see it a lot without me. Globally it is changing, it is moving more and more in the direction of marketing and is less and less a communication tool. I’m counting on getting away from it.”

Do you think there is nothing or something behind it?

“For me there is nothing.”
