“Vampire Academy”: what is the new series by Julie Plec (“The Vampire Diaries”) worth, based on the novels by Richelle Mead?

This Thursday, September 15, the American streaming service Peacock unpinned the first four of ten episodes (for now) of the “Vampire Academy” series, inspired by the first of six novels for young people by Richelle Mead, which had already was the subject of a film in 2014. Created by Julie Plec, to whom we already owe the famous “Vampire Diaries” (which attracted millions of fans from 2009 to 2017) and actress Marguerite Mcintyre, this novelty in is the reboot of said film, and brings us back to our time, in the hidden territory of the last vampires, which are divided into two classes.

Part of the elite and royalty, the Moroi shun daylight and drink people’s blood without killing them. And then there are their protectors of sorts, the Dhampirs, who are half-vampire, half-human and behave almost like you and me. But they excel in combat! These two groups have in common the fear of the Strigoi, immortals who look like zombies…

The story centers on the friendship of Vasilissa aka Lissa Dragomir (Daniela Nieves), Princess Moroi, and Rosemarie aka “Rose” Hathaway (Sisi Stringer), who are closer than ever since the family tragedy of the first . And both go back together to their school, St. Vladimir’s Academy, the Hogwarts of the bloodsuckers.

As teenagers, they are ready for all adventures – and forbidden romances – and it doesn’t take long to be drawn into a plot to destroy their secret society, shown to be very aesthetic and glamorous, and where many bling bling parties take place. On the other hand, the horrible Strigoi plan to make Lissa one of their own!

Paranormal, love, sex, drama, family ties, fights, life lessons… These are the main ingredients of the world created by Richelle Mead, which primarily appeals to 13-35 year olds, and is similar in bits and pieces to “Harry Potter”. (already mentioned), “Hunger Games” or “Game of Thrones”, in its ‘medieval’ side and ‘blood ties that make blood flow…’. Of course, one can enter here without knowing anything about them. But we must admit that all the things catapulted in the viewer’s face in the first episode, starting with a large number of characters, are a bit overwhelming… This has the effect, on the one hand, of slowing down the pace of the action, and on the other, to remain on the surface in relation to the psychology of these same characters. Among them, we will mention Dimitri (Kieron Moore, revealed in “Sex Education”), the trainer with the perfect body who makes Rose flinch, and Christian, the tormented lover of Lissa, camped by the Canadian André Dae Kim.

Despite these weaknesses and its proximity to other fantastic franchises, we agree with Julie Plec: in the plethora of “vampiric” stories circulating in popular culture, this one is unique to say the least. But once again, only their target audience will decide… With their teeth, of course…
